DC Co-Founder, Damon Way started DC’s Artist Projects Series in 2001 as a vehicle for DC to work with artists who influence street culture, fine arts, and popular design. Select artists are given creative control over the design, branding and packaging of a DC shoe. DC’s Artist Projects™ includes models designed by Shepard Fairey, Kaws, Dave Kinsey, Eric So, Phil Frost, Thomas Campbell, Arkitip/Evan Hecox, Andy Howell, Michael Leon, Methamphibian, SSUR, Natas Kaupas, André and Aaron Rose. Since then, DC has expanded its Special Projects to include the music focused Remix Series; and it’s Double Label Projects, partnerships with other inspired brands and notable creative influences.
For the latest Double Label Project, DC partnered with l
egendary French designer agnes b. As one of the world’s leading influencers of contemporary art for more than 30 years, agnes b. has supported hundreds of young artists, musicians, filmmakers and illustrators, making the partnership one of equal inspirations.
Damon Way provided his insight on this latest endeavor…
What inspires you to collaborate with other brands for the Special Projects Series?
DW: The potentiality of two entities (brands or persons) working together to create something that cannot exist without the participation of both sides. The act of doing so provides a stage for new ideas to be explored that are not necessarily inherit to either side of the collaboration… it is a vehicle to push boundaries and expand brand perceptions.
What brought DC and agnes b together?
DW: agnes b. has been a supporter of the arts for a long time, which I have great respect for. Many of the artists that I have worked with over time also see her in the same light… a true patron of the creative counter culture, which is what drew me in.
What similarities do you see between agnes b efforts in music/art/fashion and yours with the Special Project Series?
DW: I see a similarity between what we both do, in that we share a sincere interest and passion for this particular niche of creativity, and both work to incorporate it into our “brand lives” through projects that are close and personal to us. And although the Artists Projects™ program reflects only one area of this creative whole, I have just as much enthusiasm and love for the other pieces… music, film, design, which agnes b. has brought to her brand over the years.
